Keeping business moving: what roadside callouts tell us

18 September 2026

Why roadworthy light commercial vehicles - and fast roadside support - matter when downtime is not an option

For a small business, a van, ute or light truck is often much more than a way to get from one place to another. It can be a mobile workshop, stockroom and delivery vehicle all in one. When it is off the road, appointments can be missed, jobs delayed and customers left waiting.

Vero Roadside Assistance callout data from September to August shows how common, everyday vehicle problems can quickly become business problems - and why roadworthiness deserves regular attention.

THE COST OF A VEHICLE THAT CANNOT MOVE

Over the period, Vero Roadside Assistance supported light commercial vehicle customers through a significant volume of callouts, with demand peaking in March, when 15% of the full-year total was recorded. Each event represents a driver whose working day was interrupted and a vehicle that was temporarily unable to do its job. Some issues could be addressed at the roadside; others required a tow. In every case, reducing the time spent stranded helped limit the flow-on effects for the business and its customers.

BATTERY ISSUES LEAD THE DATA

Battery problems were the largest category - a total of 34% of all callouts. That makes battery care the clearest prevention message in the data. Regular checks can help identify a weakening battery before a vehicle fails to start at the beginning of a busy day or between customer jobs. Warning signs such as slow starting, dim lights or an ageing battery should not be ignored.

TOWS SHOW THE VALUE OF RAPID SUPPORT

Tows were the second-largest category, accounting for 23% of the total. A tow can mean a vehicle cannot be safely repaired where it has stopped, making prompt assessment and the right recovery response important. For a commercial vehicle carrying tools, equipment or stock, switching to another vehicle may not be straightforward. Getting help organised quickly can reduce uncertainty and get the repair process under way sooner.

TYRES AND KEYS: EVERYDAY ISSUES, REAL DISRUPTION

Tyre issues generated 11% of the total - while keys and lockouts accounted for 5%. These incidents may sound routine, but their business impact can be significant. Tyre pressure, tread depth and the condition and accessibility of the spare should be checked regularly, especially before longer journeys. A simple key plan, including secure access to a spare, can also prevent a minor mistake from becoming a lengthy roadside delay.

ROADWORTHINESS STARTS BEFORE THE JOURNEY

The data reinforces the value of a simple, consistent vehicle-check routine. Batteries, tyres, brakes, lights, fluids and warning indicators all deserve attention, along with scheduled servicing and prompt investigation of emerging faults. For businesses operating several vehicles, recording checks and maintenance can help make roadworthiness part of everyday operations rather than something considered only after a breakdown. Drivers should also know where safety equipment and spare-wheel tools are stored and how to report a fault early.

WHEN BREAKDOWNS HAPPEN, TIME MATTERS

Breakdowns cannot always be prevented, even with good maintenance, so a plan for what happens next is just as important. Drivers should move to a safe location where possible, make themselves visible, avoid attempting unsafe roadside repairs and request assistance. For eligible Vero customers, Vero Roadside Assistance provides access to AA Roadservice support when help is needed on the road.

A PRACTICAL WAY TO PROTECT THE WORKING DAY

Roadworthiness and roadside assistance play different but complementary roles. Regular maintenance can reduce the likelihood of avoidable breakdowns. Roadside support can help when the unexpected still happens, providing practical assistance at a stressful moment and helping the driver take the next safe step. Together, they can help minimise downtime and keep people, vehicles and customer commitments moving.

For light commercial vehicle owners, the message from Vero Roadside Assistance callout data is clear: small checks can help prevent major disruption, and having reliable support available can make a meaningful difference when a vehicle is stranded. A few minutes spent checking a battery, tyres and keys today could help protect a full day of work tomorrow.
