Case Study: Material Damage and Business Interruption policy
14 September 2026
New to the commercial insurance industry, or still building your knowledge of commercial products? We're pleased to bring you a practical example to help show how cover can respond when it matters.
This adapted claim scenario represents a potential claimable event and brings Material Damage and Business Interruption cover to life. It also highlights the important role a broker can play in helping a client understand their cover, navigate the claims process and get back to business.
The moment it mattered: When a break-in forced a coffee shop to close
At 12:45am on a quiet weekend, burglars forced entry into a local coffee shop. Security cameras captured the moment locks were broken and doors forced open, but what followed became more than just theft.
Inside, the damage was extensive.
The till and receipt printer were smashed. Food and drinks were taken from fridges and storage. A phone was stolen. Security cameras, both inside and outside the store, were destroyed. By morning, the owner arrived to find the shop in disarray.
But the biggest impact wasn’t just what had been taken, it was the fact the business couldn’t open. For a small business, even a single day of lost trading can have a significant financial impact.
Repairs were needed, equipment had to be replaced and the premises had to be made secure again. For three whole days, the doors stayed closed.
But with Material Damage and Business Interruption in place, both the physical and financial impacts of the loss were addressed.
Here's how the claim unfolded.
- Starting the claim: The owner contacted their broker, who helped them notify Vero promptly and lodge the claim online. The broker worked with the owner to gather the initial information, including details of the damage and available security footage. With the extent of the break-in clear, the claim process could begin without delay.
- Repairing the damage: The property damage aspect of the claim was responded to first, covering the cost to repair and reinstate the shop to a working condition. The broker remained involved, helping the owner understand the next steps and supporting communication with the claims team and project managers as the damage and reinstatement requirements were assessed.
- Back to business: At the same time, the Business Interruption cover came into effect. The broker helped the owner understand what supporting information was required and assisted them to provide historical sales data for the claim assessment. A value was then calculated to cover the income lost during the three-day closure. This meant the owner wasn’t left absorbing the full financial impact of those lost trading days, helping to stabilise cash flow while getting the business back up and running.
When a business is forced to close, fixing what’s broken is only half the battle, especially when that shop is someone’s livelihood. Our goal is to minimise the disruption and ensure the doors stay open.
At a Glance I What’s in the Material Damage & Business Interruption cover?
When something unexpected disrupts a business, the impact is rarely limited to physical damage alone.
We bring together Material Damage and Business Interruption cover to help businesses recover both their assets and their income following an insured event.
Material Damage cover provides indemnity for physical loss of or damage to insured property during the period of insurance. This can be settled through repair, replacement or payment, up to the applicable sum insured.
Cover can extend to a range of associated costs where damage has occurred, including:
- Demolition, dismantling and debris removal
- Costs required to protect or secure property following a loss
- Professional fees necessary for reinstatement
- Additional costs such as express freight or overtime labour to expedite repairs
Business Interruption cover then responds to the financial impact as a direct result of damage - helping to cover loss of income and ongoing costs while the business is unable to operate as normal.
These covers are designed to work in tandem:
- Material Damage addresses the physical repair or replacement of property
- Business Interruption supports continuity by covering lost revenue and helping maintain cash flow during downtime
As outlined in the policy, claims are subject to conditions including prompt notification, taking reasonable steps to minimise further loss, and providing supporting information to assess the claim.
Together, Material Damage and Business Interruption help clients recover from both the physical and financial impacts of an insured event. Brokers play a key role in helping clients consider the cover they may need and supporting them through the claims process when the unexpected happens.
