2 options to cover your home

Maxi Cover

With Maxi cover, we’ll repair or replace your home as new, up to the Sum Insured you’ve specified. It’s our most comprehensive cover, with a range of extra benefits.

Flexi Cover

Great basic insurance coverage, our Flexi cover is useful if you want a cheaper policy. Your repair or replacement is based on market value of the house and materials, taking wear and tear into account.

Calculate your Sum Insured

When you take out cover for your home, you'll need to specify a Sum Insured that represents the maximum total amount we'll pay to repair or rebuild your home. We encourage you to get an estimate for how much it would cost to rebuild your home using a method we accept, and setting your Sum Insured based on that estimate.

Setting an appropriate Sum Insured will help ensure that you have enough cover to repair or rebuild your home if you need it, and it also means that you only pay for the cover you actually need. You can calculate your Sum Insured online yourself, or ask a professional to help.

More about Sum Insured

Qualifying for SumExtra

By updating your Sum Insured based on a professional estimate or Cordell calculation, you may also qualify for SumExtra.

That means your insurance cover goes even further, with 10% more cover for natural disasters and full replacement cover for damage caused by events like fire, storm or flood.

Excesses, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply to these policies. Please check the policy wording for details of cover. The provision of cover is subject to the underwriting criteria that apply at the time.

Our website provides general information about our products and services to help you make choices when it comes to protecting the things in life and business that really matter. How we'll settle your claim

‘As-new’ condition
If your home is destroyed or damaged, we’ll pay to replace or repair it to an ‘as-new’ condition up to your Sum Insured, including reaching the same standard of legal compliance that it had before the damage. You could also be eligible for extra cover under our SumExtra benefit.

‘As-is’ condition
If your home is damaged or destroyed due to one of 14 specified events, we’ll pay you enough to repair or replace it to its condition immediately before the damage occurred, taking into account any wear and tear.

Cover for any sudden accidental damage or loss

Specific events only
Your Flexi home policy covers you for 14 specific events. For information on which events are covered, check your policy document.

Natural disaster damage

If your home suffers damage from a natural disaster that is more than the EQ Cover limit, we’ll pay the difference, up to your sum insured, less any applicable excesses. If you qualify for our SumExtra benefit you may be eligible for 10% more cover.

10% extra cover for natural disasters

If your home is completely destroyed by a natural disaster and your sum insured isn’t quite enough to repair or replace your house, we’ll pay up to 10% more under the SumExtra benefit.

Full replacement for causes other than natural disaster

If your home is completely destroyed by something other than a natural disaster and your sum insured isn’t enough to fix it, we’ll pay the full cost no matter what it is under our SumExtra benefit.

Alternative accommodation

If your home is uninhabitable we’ll pay reasonable costs for temporary accommodation (including boarding your pets) for up to 12 months. Your alternative accommodation benefit is on top of your sum insured, so you don’t need to include it in your rebuild calculation.

One excess per event across all your policies

If one event means you need to make a claim on more than one of your Vero car, house and contents policies at the same time, you’ll only need to pay one excess.

Landscaping

Cover for damage to your lawn, flowers, trees, hedges or shrubs if your home was also damaged, or the damage was caused by a vehicle.

Retaining walls

Cover for damage to retaining walls, including those you share with neighbours. Cover for retaining walls is included in your sum insured.

Gradual damage

We’ll repair damage to your home, which is caused over time by a leak or overflow from an internal water pipe, hose or tank, up to a limit (which includes finding the leak)

Power generation equipment

We'll pay for loss from certain events to power generation equipment that provides power to your home.

Security systems equipment

Cover to reset or re-programme alarms or security systems in your home.

Keys and locks

We’ll cover the replacement of your keys or locks if the keys are stolen, lost, or illegally duplicated.

Stress payment

If your home is completely destroyed, we’ll pay you a lump sum to help with mental and financial stress.

Accidental damage caused by house/room sharing guests

Under our house insurance policy, you might be covered for accidental damage (but not deliberate damage) if you’ve rented rooms or your house out temporarily. But conditions do apply, so talk to your broker about whether you're covered.

Damage to land

Your policy doesn’t cover any damage to land that needs to be fixed, but with this policy you may be eligible for up to $100,000 of cover for land from the Earthquake Commission.
